DTLA Oyster Festival October 13 & 14

For the fourth consecutive year, Grand Central Market and The Oyster Gourmet will host oyster farmers from around the continent at the DTLA Oyster Festival on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Meet the farmers, taste their half-shells, and learn about the distinctive “merroir,” or taste of place, that distinguishes oysters grown in different waters. This year’s six participating farms at the two-day celebration of the beautiful bivalve include:

  • Chelsea Farms, a current working model of environmental sustainability by making a priority of farming the Olympia Oyster, a native oyster to Olympia, Washington that was on its way to extinction. 
  • Hama Hama from Washington State, the oldest oyster farm on the West Coast, active since 1922. 
  • Glacial Point Oysters, a production of high quality oysters and blue mussels in Kachemak Bay, Alaska.
  • Paradise Oysters grown in the cold waters of Deep Bay in Southern Baynes Sound, British Columbia, farmed by Ron Osmond.
  • Rock Harbor Oysters from a small, family-owned farm on Cape Cod Bay Orleans, Massachusetts.
  • Sol Azul Seafarms, based in Baja California within the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The farmers will be shucking both days from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Market’s Hill Street platform adjacent to The Oyster Gourmet, which will offer a curated selection of French wines by the glass and by the bottle. Around the Market, vendors will offer special dishes featuring oysters. 

As part of the celebration, Louisiana-rooted, Los Angeles-based band, the Mudbug Brass Band will inspire festival-goers to dance and swing to the rhythms of traditional New Orleans Jazz, R&B, and Funk on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

On both days, kids can visit a free "shell-art" booth by Little Junebugs, where they can make their own projects using oyster shells, mini seashells and other underwater-themed decorations.
