The Los Angeles Bread Festival is back! Get ready to carbo load as Grand Central Market hosts the third annual Los Angeles Bread Festival on June 3rd and 4th. The free, two-day event is a celebration of Southern California's artisanal bread renaissance and an invitation to the public to experience the many expressions of L.A. bread at its best.

The centerpiece of the festival is a pop-up marketplace showcasing local bread bakers, as well as bread-centric workshops and demonstrations. Among the bakers setting up shop at the pop-up marketplace will be Antigua Artisan Bread, Bub & Grandma’s (Saturday), Friends & Family (Sunday), Challah Hub, Ensaymada Project,  Los Angeles Bread Bakers, Red Bread, The SpeakEasy Bakery and The Underground Bakery.   Jam and nut butter purveyors include IndieJams, M. Greenwood Jams, and Spread the Love. Find the ingredients and equipment to make and display your bread from Fat Uncle Farm, The King’s Roost, and The Wooden Palate.

Back by popular demand, "Feel the Churn Butter Aerobics" will get the crowd's heart racing with a butter-making workshop. Other family-friendly events include demos and workshops led by Grand Central Market vendors including Clark Street Bread and Olio Wood-Fired Pizzeria chef Brad Kent. Additional workshops led by guest bakers will cover artisan bread making at home, beginning bread making, pita, biscuits and challah plus community bread baking hosted by MOMO Wood-fired Bread Oven.

Throughout the weekend, Grand Central Market vendors will provide an eclectic offering of special, one-time only bread menu offerings.

10 – 11 am Feel the Churn Butter Aerobics

Work up a sweat while transforming a jar of cream into butter! FREE

10 – 11 am Making Homemade Muesli with King’s Roost

Roe Sie of the King's Roost will show you firsthand how to make your very own muesli using freshly milled whole organic oat groats. You'll learn a little of the history of this classic Swiss breakfast cereal, as well as get a better understanding of how you can make your breakfasts faster, healthier and cheaper all at the same time. Then you'll roll some oat and try your own sample of home made muesli! FREE

11 am – 12 pm Preparing breakfast focaccia "Danish" with vanilla-infused ricotta-cream, caramelized sugar and fruit from the farmers market presented by Olio

In this lecture and demo, Olio Wood-fired Pizzeria Chef Brad Kent will cover the fundamentals of bread making, starting with selection of flour, blending flours to create signature bread taste and texture, influences of mixing process and use of preferments to enhance flavor and digestibility. Live demo will include mixing, kneading and handling dough, shaping, topping and baking Olio Wood Fired Pizzeria's signature Fruit Focaccia (aka Wood-Fired Danish) as well as baking in a wood fired oven. Small tastes will be included for the first 60 attendees. FREE 

12 – 1 pm Showing the Dough Who's Boss with Clark Street Bread 

Watch and learn how to divide, scale, preshape and final shape sourdough bread with style Clark Street bread baker and owner, Zack Hall. FREE

1 – 3 p.m. Wild Yeast Mothers with Red Bread’s Rose Lawrence

The foundation of bread is in the care of your starter. Whether you are a novice or experienced baker you will gain knowledge on how to care and test your starter using all your senses. We will go over the romance of old starters, the science of the different cultures, feeding regiments, retarding, flour mixes, and maintaining multiple starters. Each student will build multiple starters in class and go home with samples of different starters to nourish and begin their experiments (hands on, vegetarian). FREE

2 - 3 pm Feel the Churn Butter Aerobics

3:30 – 4:30 pm Biscuit Basics with pastry chef Beth Kellerhals

If your goals include whipping up soft, layered biscuits at a moment’s notice, then this workshop is for you! It will cover Butter size, how to mix biscuits by hand, and how to get the perfect biscuit every time. FREE

5 - 6 p.m. California Artisan Cheese Guild Class 

California has a rich dairy history and produces world class cheeses! Join cheesemonger-sister duo Lydia and Marnie Clarke of DTLA Cheese in an exciting class featuring some of their favorite California cheese makers! Learn the stories and flavors as they walk you through 5 incredible cheeses! Proceeds benefit the California Artisan Cheese Guild! $25
